By Asa Laws
Love is beguilement from the mind;
A lie of an idea, taken up,
Lifting the heart to passion
And the confused body to content.
Love is happy, and conducts the believer
From perturbed, isolated hell
Above gardens and hills – nailed –
To leave chains loosed and content.
Which is love, then: lie or truth?
The discontent delight to reveal
Whether it is grace or passion.
For Paul spoke well of charity,
And David fell to be enchanted.
Cupid or Christ takes up prayers?
